The Headwaters Forest Reserve (Elk River Trailhead & Old Town of Falk Tour) was set aside to protect and preserve the ecology and wildlife of the area. Particularly the old-growth redwood stands that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon.
The Headwaters Forest Reserve is a group of old growth coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) groves, comprising about 7472acre. There are two public trails in the Reserve. The Elk River Trail winds along the South Fork Elk River for 3 miles, followed by a 2-mile ascent to a short loop through an old-growth redwood forest.
Situated on a large flat embraced by a long bend in the Mattole River, A.W. Way County Park contains wide grassy spaces ideal for family camping. There are a variety of camping spaces, from full sun to tree-shaded. During non-drought years there is a substantial flow in the Mattole River even during the summer, with great swimming holes.

The campsite itself is very primitive. There are fire rings and small outhouses dotting the area. There is no potable water, but water can be taken from the creek and boiled or filtered.
